CHANDIGARH, APRIL 24:
The Revenue, Rehabilitation & Disaster Management and the Mines & Geology Minister Punjab, Mr. Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria straight after assuming office, here today, held a meeting with the officials of Mining & Geology Department and directed them to accord top priority to provide sand and gravel at cheaper rates to the public.
Coming down heavily on the need for better monitoring to check illegal mining, Mr. Sarkaria directed the officials to adopt zero tolerance towards it.
Awestruck at the glaring demand and supply gap which was reported as supply being approximately 3 to 4 times shorter than the demand, Mr. Sarkaria instructed the officials to come up immediately with the identification of alternative mining sites and work out the modalities to bridge the gap as quickly as possible.
Earlier the officers of the department gave a presentation on the status of sand/gravel mining in Punjab and also informed the minister about the findings of high powered committee which visited Telangana under the chairmanship of Cabinet Minister Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu. Discussion was also held on the proposed Mining Policy of the State.
After detailed discussions, Mr. Sarkaria informed that after the Cabinet Sub-committee report, "the State Mining Sector is expected to undergo a revolution which will be the harbinger of an era of zero illegal mining and sand availability to the public at the click of a mouse. "
Besides others, Mr. Jaspal Singh Prinicpal Secretary, Mr. Kumar Rahul Director, Mr. Vineet Kumar Additional Director and Mr. Vinod Kumar Chief Engineer Mines and Geology, Punjab was present on the occasion.
